Help Me Finish My T-shirt Quilt

Written by Andrea Funk | June 2023

Have you looked at photographs of T-shirt quilts online and thought, “I can make that.” Or “How hard can it be?” So you started making your T-shirt quilt. After you cut your T-shirts, you then realized that you were in over your head. What you were making, just wasn’t what you had envisioned.

You now have what quilters call an UFO. A UFO is an Unfinished Object or Unfinished Project. It the start of a quilt that never seems to get finished.

So Now What?

You have come to the conclusion that your T-shirt quilt will never be completed unless someone else finished it.

Well you are in the right place!

Too Cool T-shirt Quilts can finish your T-shirt quilt – no matter what you have done so far. You are not the only person with a half-finished T-shirt quilt.

Over the years, we have completed so many T-shirt quilts that were begun by people just like you. We can salvage your T-shirts and transform them into a T-shirt quilt that will delight you.

How Do We Salvage Your T-shirts?

We start the process by removing any iron-on backing that may have been applied to the back of the T-shirts. Many quilters think this is necessary. Here at Too Cool T-shirt Quilts, we don’t use iron-on backing because it is unnecessary and actually makes our work more difficult. This easily pulls off the back of the T-shirt. Read more about iron on backing here.

If you have progressed on your quilt through the process of beginning to sew your blocks together, we will take the blocks apart before we begin working with them.

Next, we re cut your T-shirt blocks to fit our block sizes. Please be assured that we will not cut off any part of a logo or image to do this. If a T-shirt block cannot be cut to our block sizes without cutting off part of the image, we will mount that T-shirt block onto a larger piece of matching T-shirt material that fits our sizing system.

If, on the other hand, you have completed your quilt top and want us to long arm quilt it for you, we will only do so, if you made your quilt using the Too Cool T-shirt Quilts method. You can read about How To Make A Too Cool T-shirt Quilt here. Our equipment is set up to make T-shirt quilts only this way.

What’s the Additional Cost to Finishing Your Quilt?

There is additional work we need to do to make your blocks fit our system. The cost of this work is not built into our pricing. We will add a small per block charge for each block that we need to retrofit to our system. We only will charge you if a block must be resized up to fit our block sizes. If we can cut a block to our block system without an issue, there is no additional charge for that block.

Rescuing blocks that are already sewn into a quilt top or from a partially sewn quilt top will be priced based on the particular situation. We try to keep these costs to a minimum because we feel it is important to have those T-shirt blocks made into a great quilt.

Once the blocks are repaired to fit our system, they are then ready to go into one of our quilts. At this point, there is no difference between using a repaired block or a regular block in the construction of a quilt. So we just add the block repair cost on to the price of a regular quilt.

Conclusion

Your T-shirts are important to you, other wise you would not have kept this UFO T-shirt quilt for as long as you have. We hope you will trust us to rescue your T-shirts and transform them into a quilt that you will show off to everyone you know.
